Rio 2 Review

The title’s a misnomer. Blue Sky’s CGI sequel brings back most of the cast of its 2011 hit, but drops them into the Amazon, where Jesse Eisenberg’s macaw Blu discovers his long-lost, feathered in-laws. This is sometimes a ’toon Meet The Parents, with Andy Garcia in the De Niro slot, though the loosely plotted scenes get in each other’s way. We want more psycho cockatoo Nigel (Jemaine Clement), fewer humourless loggers. But there are dazzling interludes (a Busby Berkeley avian routine), good turns (Kristin Chenoweth’s tunefully lovelorn frog), and a flying soccer battle in time for the World Cup.
