This wholesome family comedy is based on Beverly Cleary’s Ramona Quimby books about accident-prone kid Ramona (Joey King) and her older sister Beatrice, aka Beezus (Selena Gomez). Dialogue and plotting are simplistic: this is aimed squarely at young girls; less so women who fondly remember the books or the ’80s TV series starring a young Sarah Polley. This is less about a naughty kid and more about the restoration of the safe, suburban family unit (basic message: marry the boy next door). Still, Joey King is charming, and if her Disney-star sister Gomez seems a bit bland, then remember it could have been worse — they originally wanted Miley Cyrus.
