Original Title:

Outrageous Fortune

One of the best of Bette Midler’s comedies sees her perfectly cast as a broad who’s thrown into an alliance of convenience with Miss Shelley Long, the prim actress with whom she finds herself sharing a boyfriend. Long makes the film as much as Midler, though, grating against her brash mutual ‘friend’ as successfully as if Midler were a foot and a half taller, had a penchant for baseball and went by the name of Sam Malone. Leslie Dixon’s script is effective, though sometimes seems stranded between the domestic humour and the big issues being played out.

Still, engaging, undemanding stuff.

Outrageous, certainly, but there's nothing fortunate about the winning humour of Long and the ever-scathing joy that is Midler.
