One of the best of Bette Midlers comedies sees her perfectly cast as a broad whos thrown into an alliance of convenience with Miss Shelley Long, the prim actress with whom she finds herself sharing a boyfriend. Long makes the film as much as Midler, though, grating against her brash mutual friend as successfully as if Midler were a foot and a half taller, had a penchant for baseball and went by the name of Sam Malone. Leslie Dixons script is effective, though sometimes seems stranded between the domestic humour and the big issues being played out.
Still, engaging, undemanding stuff.
