The brief life and violent death of Christopher ‘The Notorious B.I.G.’ Wallace always read like a film script: a crack dealer who escaped a life of crime through his unerring talent for rap. Murdered at 24, his legacy includes two multi-platinum albums, one posthumously. This retelling of his life, however, serves him not at all; executive produced by Biggie’s friend Sean Combs (Puff Daddy) it plays like a made-for-TV movie; thin production values, stunted dialogue — and while Woolard is a convincing Biggie, Combs, you feel (an unlikely saint in almost every scene), has altered history to his own ends. The second star is for the soundtrack.
