Chick-lit becomes chick-flick, bringing together both the best and worst of both genres as recently divorced Sarah (Diane Lane) tries to find Mr. Right thanks to a family intervention that involves posting her dating profile online against her will. All the usual suspects are here — the cad (Dermot Mulroney), the gay best friend, the embarrassing family members (including Oirish dad Christopher Plummer) and, of course, the true love (John Cusack).
But such a ludicrous array of obstacles are placed along the path to happiness that it becomes almost as annoying as Lane’s predictive acting technique — just watch her face BEFORE each dramatic incident. If only the whole script had been as sharp as some of Cusack’s caustic one-liners, then this might have appealed to more than just the Chardonnay brigade.
