How did a hardscrabble town on the Tennessee river come to change the face of ‘60s music? That’s the question posed during two hours of classic soul and Southern stomp that will thrill musos and introduce the wider world to the Muscle Shoals Sound and its cranky-but-inspiring originator, Rick Hall. Remembering their seminal recording sessions there are artists from Aretha Franklin to Wilson Pickett, whose sceptical first visit to the studio morphs into R&B alchemy captured in terrific archive footage. The real stars, though, are gifted local studio players The Swampers: in Shoals slang, some seriously greasy cats.
