Diego Luna isn’t exactly a dead ringer for Michael Jackson, but he moonwalks through Harmony Korine’s celebrity-impersonators drama with panache.
After meeting Marilyn Monroe (Samantha Morton), the shy young “Michael” moves to Scotland, where an eccentric commune awaits, including The Queen (Anita Pallenberg) and Little Red Riding Hood (Korine’s wife, Rachel). Most sinister is Marilyn’s violent husband Charlie Chaplin (Denis Lavant), but as with many of the characters, their relationship is never fully explored.
Mister Lonely is appealingly bonkers, but its dark, self-indulgent ending undermines its charming set-up.
