In a bleak, near-future America, rock poet Jack Fate (Bob Dylan) headlines a benefit concert organised by crooked promoter John Goodman and calculating TV producer Jessica Lange.
Dylan wanders through scenes like a monosyllabic scarecrow, while an extraordinary ensemble, helplessly drawn to his flame, can't bring any sense to a socio-political parable so inept it's beyond redemption.
Jeff Bridges and Goodman give imposing performances, but only scenes of Dylan on stage convey his fabled charisma.
