Steve Coogan and Julianne Moore — now there’s a new onscreen couple, though they’re hardly a happy one. We meet rocker Susanna and art dealer Beale during their split, all seen through the eyes of six year-old daughter Maisie (Aprile).
As Beale romances the nanny, Susanna hooks up with a barman (Alexander Skarsgård), who bonds with neglected Maisie. It’s a moving character drama that skilfully modernises Henry James’ source novel, each scene exposing grown-up secrets as seen through increasingly less innocent eyes. Performances are strong — Aprile is a startling young talent.
