My Last Five Girlfriends

RICHARD CURTIS AS ASS-RAPED BY Michel Gondry was presumably the pitch, but though it’s packed with ambition and ideas, Julian Kemp’s subversive rom-com is bogged down by wild fluctuations in tone and acting ability.

As Duncan, our High Fidelity-like guide through his exes of the title, Brendan Patricks is decent — seemingly unsure whether or not to go ‘full Hugh Grant’ but affable and bumbling and acerbic enough. His exes, though, range from the good (Kelly Adams) to the terrible (hello again, Jane March) to, in Naomie Harris, the what-the-hell-are-you-doing-in-this?

On the plus side, Michael Sheen delivers a cracking cameo, there are some wonderful sight and narrative gags and Kemp delivers occasionally inspired set-pieces — a life via Barbie especially — on a budget that wouldn’t have covered the foundation on Did You Hear About The Morgans?.

Packed with ambition and ideas, but Julian Kemp’s subversive rom-com is bogged down by wild fluctuations in tone and acting ability.
