Last Exorcism Part II, The

As with the ill-starred Blair Witch sequel Book Of Shadows, this direct follow-up ditches the found footage for more conventional horror. But it’s so grindingly average that any emotional connection you might have to poor Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) as she tries to rebuild her life and escape her literal demon is quickly diluted by cheap jump scares and a lack of anything fresh. Turning the possession angle into a sort of hell-spawned ex-lover with a crush doesn’t work, and the result feels more like a horror parody where the jokes fail to land.

A stylistic departure from the shaky aesthetic of the first film. Sadly, most of its nervy shocks and creeping sense of unease go the same way.
