Marking the debut of Indian director Rohan Sippy, Kuch Naa Kaho belongs to a rich tradition of films about designer families that are usually conservative in storyline but often progressive in nature. Bachchan plays Raj, a New Yorker who travels to India with the intention of bride-hunting until he meets and falls in love with matchmaker and single mum Namrata (Rai).
Doing away with any redundant subplots that would distract from what is central to the story, Sippy's well-crafted, light-hearted journey offers a steady stream of gags from a committed cast. After the success of Devdas, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai silences any remaining critics and proves she possesses the acting talent to back up her flawless looks. Bachchan, meanwhile, ventures into new territory, and is particularly strong in the second, more emotional half of this heart-warming drama.
