While films like The Cooler and Intacto explored the notion of luck to intriguing effect, this Lindsay Lohan/McFly vehicle merely uses it as a bland twist on the Freaky Friday life-swap genre. Worldly Ashley (Lindsay Lohan) accepts the idea that she’s swapped luck with Jake (Chris Pine) without question, and starts her bid to find her masked Prince Charming (whom she reasons can reverse her new bad luck) by kissing as many boys as possible. This last plot point, along with Ashley’s girlie good luck, allows for some adolescent wish-fulfilment. Young viewers may also be amused by Lohan’s slapstick interludes and the charms of Rob Lowe-lookalike Pine.
But this suffers from a nonsensical, continuity-troubled plot that exists chiefly to promote British band McFly across the pond. With its underwhelming romance and hurried conclusion, Just My Luck is an even more throwaway affair than director Petrie’s How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.
