While making their 2001 album Discovery, French dance duo Daft Punk conceived the idea of creating a cartoon around the album, and, after writing their own script, commissioned Japanese animator Leiji Matsumoto (who created Space Pirate Captain Harlock, among other not-too-widely-known animes) to bring their vision to the screen.
Though the pop world in-jokes will raise a smile, the film fails to appeal to a wider audience as the plot and graphic style are reminiscent of second-rate, Battle Of The Planets-style '70s kids TV. As Discovery plays out in perfect chronology, the (dialogue-free) events on screen seem to bear no relation to the music which supposedly inspired them.
