The age-old question of why God lets bad things happen recurs in the concluding part of Krzysztof Piesiewicz’s Dantesque trilogy.
With motifs of celestiality and surveillance, the purgatorial storyline careers towards tragedy as Rafal Fudalej tries to atone for his mother’s accidental death by saving the soul of Wojciech Pszoniak, an art dealer who has stolen a painting from a Polish church.
Indeed, such is the fascination of Fudalej’s encounters with Pszoniak and suspicious cop Zbigniew Zamachowski that subplots involving his girlfriend and murderer brother feel superfluous. Nevertheless, documentarian Stanislaw Mucha directs with a Kieslowskian blend of wit, compassion and control.
