That Tommy Lee Jones is an accomplished artist behind the camera should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada. Still, the grizzled star is perhaps not the first name you’d expect to direct a feminist Western — which is what this exquisitely shot adventure initially appears to be, with Hilary Swank on stonily strong form as heroine Mary Bee Cuddy, who recruits Jones’ outlaw to escort a trio of traumatised women. Pity, then, that a jarring mid-film twist pushes it into more conventional cowboy territory, but Jones has still fashioned another handsome Western for the thinking man (and woman).
