In these times when computer animation is more real than the hand in front of your face, traditional hand-drawn cartoons have to try twice as hard to get noticed. In the animation stakes, this story of a trio of children transformed into fish makes up for its flat animation with some elegantly sinister design.
An undersea city is particularly stunning and contains flashes of brilliance in its detail. Sadly, it's very much a case of style over content; the script lacks the wit and sophistication that even child audiences expect these days. Devoting more time to delivering meaningful messages than to driving the story makes it difficult to connect with the characters. Younger children may enjoy it, but it lacks the originality necessary with the wealth of superior animated films out there.
