Sacha (Tarter) and Trevor(Sather) are a gigolo and his ‘gent’ (valet-cum-agent) who provide discreet, paid-for companionship for the older, richer ladies of London. When Sacha injures his ankle, Trevor covers for him and gets a taste for the life. First-time feature director Richard Bracewell understands the melancholy nature of the characters’ lonely lives and, as cinematographer, feeds this into his images of the quiet, neon-lit city nights.
However, there’s no story beneath the surface of the setting or the characters, and consequently the film marks time in its final third, despite wonderful, touching turns from Siân Phillips, Susannah York and Anna Massey as Sacha’s most lucrative clients.
