This ensemble drama is perfect for DVD: unexceptional, but well worth seeing for the performances. Ryan Reynolds is writer Michael, a fast-talking city type visiting home for a celebration that turns into a time of mourning.

Cue flashbacks of his childhood with bullying father (Willem Dafoe) and kindly mother (Julia Roberts). Thanks to the quality cast and relatively restrained script, this is brought back from the brink of weepie melodrama. No extras.

The compelling performances make this definitely worth watching in the quiet hours.
