Ever wonder what happened to the days when dancing dinner rolls were the height of comedy? They’re alive and kicking — if ungracefully — in the work of semi-absurdist trio Fiona Gordon, Dominique Abel and Bruno Romy. When a gawky woman arrives at a hotel, claiming to be a fairy, a gag-fuelled farce ensues in which everyday events become ridiculous — from a folding chair to the birth of a baby. It’s awkward, it’s bizarre, it’s relentlessly whimsical, but there’s no denying The Fairy is full of cinematic magic. Whether it can spread its wings beyond an arthouse audience remains to be seen.
