What would happen if all the children ‘fathered’ by a single sperm donor were to meet — and then meet the donor himself? It’s a mouth-watering premise, and Deep Water director Jerry Rothwell does his best to deliver on its promise, following a group of half-siblings as they search first for each other, and then for their biological father, revealed from the start as an ageing hippie living in a camper van in a parking lot on Venice Beach — hardly Mark Ruffalo in The Kids Are All Right. Of the unimaginably complex emotions involved, more are concealed than revealed by Rothwell’s objective style, requiring the viewer to draw their own conclusions about the many ethical and emotional questions raised.
