Deadfall

Stefan Ruzowitzky, Austrian Oscar-winner for The Counterfeiters, is bewitched by snowy landscapes enveloping a modern Western noir of dysfunctional kin, in which robber siblings on the run Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde, fugitive chump Charlie Hunnam and plucky deputy Kate Mara and her abusive sheriff father are all caught in a blizzard, on collision for the worst Thanksgiving ever with Hunnam’s hostage parents, Kris Kristofferson and Sissy Spacek. Atop shocks and snazzy cinematography Bana’s a terrific, damaged badass and the Sissy & Kris show is good value, but there are too many dumb, mean characters you hope die horribly.

Where The Counterfeiters was full of street-wise wit and bayonet-sharp characterisation, Ruzowitzky's latest is a thriller with an altogether emptier head. That said, the wintery noir setting and gifted cast offer substantial saving graces.
