Writer-director Sam Esmail’s first feature follows lovers Dell (Long) and Kimberly (Rossum), with the twist that their story is spread not just across time but also parallel universes. The central conceit seems to be whether one being — even fractured across dimensions – is truly destined to be with another.
It’s a kooky, fresh notion and Dell and Kimberly are initially smart, peppy company, Long in particular making a charming romantic lead. However, the complex machinations of the concept become confusing, while the pair’s increasing self-absorption starts to grate, sapping all goodwill. Nonetheless, an ambitious and promising debut.
