Nightclub doorman Geoff Thompson wrote his memoirs in the toilet while working at a factory. The result was the best-seller Watch My Back, and this is the semi-fictionalised film version. In early ’80s England, down-on-his-luck Danny (Mel Raido) gains new confidence from martial-arts classes with Louis (an excellent Colin Salmon). Bouncer work follows, and Danny’s soon immersed in a world of dangerous dealers and daily scraps. But this isn’t an exercise in macho posturing: Danny’s a concerned father whose narration betrays the fear behind his bravado. Performances are varied, but it overcomes its low budget with a suspenseful story, sympathetic leads and cracking ’80s soundtrack.
