British director/writer Bernard Rose's second foray into the horror/fantasy genre (after 1988's Paperhouse) is one of the most interesting, and more importantly, scary horror movies of the 90s. Despite its sugary title, this film leaves a very dark taste in the mouth.
Virginia Madsen is a researcher investigating urban legends who, because of her scepticism, invokes the behooked nightmare with a belly of bees by unwisely standing in front of a mirror and saying his name five times. Clearly, this woman has never watched a horror film.
Played entirely straight, this is intelligent, challenging horror, and boasts a fantastic Philip Glass score.
