Alan Alda directs, writes and stars in this sub-Neil Simon, sub-Robert Altman, sub-Michael Winner comedy-drama set against the background of a lavish Italian-American wedding.
There is, predictably, a host of embarrassing relatives making things bad for father-of-the-bride Alda. He includes every seen-it done-it wedding horror cliche and adds a few not-so-zany sterotypes in for good measure - like a Mafia business partner whose presence leads to a shootout and car chase. None of this is handled with the energy and invention that turn familiar scenes into comic ones.
Alda drowns slowly in his own picture like someone who has taken on three jobs too many. Meanwhile Joe Pesci, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy stand back and lwatch his head disappear under the water.
