17 Again

Matthew Perry turns into Zac Efron in the latest variation on the body swap/time travel comedy. Mike (Perry) is getting divorced, and wishes he were the handsome basketball star of his youth (Efron). Hey presto, he’s 17 again. Pretending to be the son of best mate Ned (scene-stealer Thomas Lennon), he goes back to school and spends most of his time trying to protect his daughter’s virginity while encouraging his son to date. The best scenes are straight out of Back To The Future or Big; so-so ones recall Freaky Friday and 13 Going On 30. Missed tricks and plot holes abound, but there are enough light laughs to see you through, and Efron holds the film well.

A decent time-passer for adults, and essential for any girl under 12.
