Earlier this month, there was the first inkling that the Pokemon Go craze had helped to spurred movement for a new, live-action film based on the pocket monsters. But, as announced just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con, the new cinematic will instead be focused on a new character: Detective Pikachu.
Yes, you read that right. So it's technically an old character, possibly the most recognisable Pokemon of the franchise (stand down, Squirtle fans). This new version of Pikachu debuted in a Japanese video game, but now he'll be bringing his sleuthing skills to the wider world.
At least, we assume he'll be sleuthing; the announcement includes literally no details beyond the fact that it'll be a live-action effort (with, presumably the good detective brought to life via CGI), and there is no indication on who might write, direct or star.
Could Pikachu be a Colombo for the Pokemon Go era? And will he be investigating a murder in a Pokemon gymnasium? Legendary intends to have this one shooting next year, to strike while the pop cultural iron remains hot.
