We've had a couple of looks at Pacific Rim Uprising already, but with the trailer about to arrive, new images have popped up courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. See the latest shots of John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and some of the new tech below.
Along with the imagery comes some fresh information about where we find the world and some of its characters. We already knew that Boyega's character was Jake Pentecost, son of the late Stacker (as played by Idris Elba in the original). Now we learn he's estranged from his family, a former hotshot Jaeger pilot who, in the sequel's setting (a decade on from the original) is scratching out a living as a black market dealer in Santa Monica, living in a mansion that was ruined by a Kaiju attack. In fact, the coasts are considered dangerous places to live given the potential for more monster mash-ups, so the middle of America is where the wealthy take shelter, leaving the poor to exist on the edges. Here, people are building their own mechs in case of a return from the giant beasties, and Jake is caught up in helping with that effort.
When that brings him into conflict with the authorities, Mako (Rinko Kikuchi, returning from the original) finds a way to get him into the official Jaeger program, where he reunites with old friend Lambert (Eastwood). And they'll need to work together fast, because the old threat has returned...
"The Kaiju have found a new way," Boyega tells EW. “They are way more intelligent than we thought they were. The monsters you saw in the first movie were the test run, to see how the planet would hold up. The breach we thought was closed is not their only way into our world. Their plans are more specific. Jake leads the team in trying to build up a new defense against that."
He, alongside Eastwood's character, will be piloting Gypsy Avenger, an upgrade from the first film's Gypsy Danger, with some new tech to help the pilots. Other mechs in the pictures above include the swift, orange Saber Athena, the stocky Guardian Bravo with its powerful whips and Titan Redeemer, more of a mystery mech that requires three pilots.
