Brushing aside concerns about franchise burn-out, The Nun has scored a record opening for the ever-expanding franchise built around the Conjuring movies. The horror prequel earned $53.5 million in its first weekend.

Directed by Corin Hardy, the film charts the earlier days of the habit-wearing demon glimpsed in The Conjuring 2 and has been a big success out of the gate, making an impressive $130 million worldwide. That will be music to the ears of the team at Warner Bros., which has been having a very good few weeks.

Talking of, Crazy Rich Asians finally left the top spot, but still added $13.6 million, for an impressive $136.2 million so far. Breaking up the Warners party was Peppermint, with the Jennifer Garner-fronted revenge thriller taking home $13.2 million.

Fourth was The Meg, as the shark pic gobbled up an additional $6 million, ahead of Searching, down one place to fifth and $4.5 million.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout began its own fall down the charts, but still made $3.8 million at sixth and has crossed the $700 million mark globally. Christopher Robin slipped a place and made $3.1 million, while Operation Finale took in $3 million at eighth.

In ninth, Alpha bit into $2 million, and BlacKkKlansman earned $1.5 million at 10th.
