Though most of the movie production news during the pandemic has been about how shoots have been curtailed and sound stages left silent, there have been some creative movements on making films. One with a fascinating backstory is Malcolm & Marie, which stars Zendaya and John David Washington.

It all began with Zendaya who contacted her Euphoria show creator and head writer Sam Levinson about collaborating on a film while the series was shut down. He wrote the first draft in six days, cast Washington to star alongside Zendaya and directed the movie using a small crew at a remote location in a fascinating California house. The private location made it legal to film and the producers worked with doctors, film unions and safety crews to make sure everyone was healthy as shooting took place in June and July.

Cast and crew stayed locally and didn't mingle with anyone not associated with the film. Zendaya has posted the first image for the film, though plot details have yet to be revealed. Deadline has heard that it resembles Marriage Story in its themes, and you can get more details on how shooting unfolded here.

Malcolm & Marie doesn't have a release date set yet, but this is one we'll be on the lookout for.
