Zachary Quinto Might Star In Whirligig

Partly because Heroes’ extended death throes have him in their nefarious thrall, and partly because he's spent the last year in disguise as Empire's chief designer, Martin Barry*, Zachary Quinto has taken his sweet time in choosing another film with which to capitalise on all that Star Trek/Spock heat. But The Hollywood Reporter is saying that he’s close to sealing a deal on one. Maybe.

Quinto is circling an independent Canadian romantic comedy-drama called Whirligig, about a guy who becomes friends with the adopted son of the older lady he’s trying, very, very hard, to seduce. Awkward…

If the movie goes ahead, and THR is warning that no deal is yet in place and Quinto is keeping his options open, as you might expect from a green-blooded, analytical Vulcan, it will be an unusual choice for the 32 year-old actor. But, perhaps, a refreshing one – instead of heading for the nearest tentpole, he’s choosing something a little quieter and low-key, maybe in the hope that the obvious comparisons to **The Graduate **will bear out in more ways than one. Could Quinto be the new Dustin Hoffman?

Besides, he’s also got Star Trek 2 on his slate, which we’d imagine will start shooting sometime in 2010, so he’s plenty sorted for the big films, thank you very much.

Whirligig, which will be directed by Chaz Thorne, will start shooting early next year, with or without Quinto. But, from Thorne’s point of view, preferably with.

Seriously. Dead ringer. We call him Sylart. Not to his face.
