Last year, Lionsgate announced that, as part of a two-film deal with wrestling backers-turned-genre-filmmakers WWE, it would be producing a reboot of the Leprechaun franchise. The companies have now found a director to tackle the movie in Zach Lipovsky.
And actor and visual effects tech, Lipovsky got his biggest break when he won filmmaking reality show On The Lot, overseen by Steven Spielberg and TV power producer Mark Burnett.
Since his victory, he has gone to direct and produce a number of TV movies and other projects, including several SyFy Channel creature features. Which, weirdly, probably makes him one of the more qualified people to bring the little monster back to life.
We joked when reporting on the first word of the reboot about Dave Bautista taking on the lead role. But the companies have gone with a wrestler: the diminutive brawler known as Hornswoggle (we’re not making this up). Here’s hoping he calls original **Leprechaun **star Warrick Davis to thank him for kicking things off back in 1993.
The producers are keeping Harris Wilkinson’s script under lock and key to prevent us all learning what exciting ideas they’ve got planned for this one, but we'll keep an eye on it going forward.
