And it was all going so well for the Y: The Last Man TV adaptation. Following years of frustrating film development, the small screen version seemed to be moving along well at US network FX. Now, though, it's hit a road bump, losing showrunners Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal due to that old chestnut "creative differences".
Y: The Last Man adapts Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's much-loved comicbook series focusing on Yorick (Barry Keoghan in the show), an amateur escape artist who has become the lone male human survivor after a mysterious plague killed off everyone else with a Y chromosome — including all male animals. Except, that is, for his pet capuchin monkey, Ampersand, who follows him around.
Now living in a world entirely filled with women, Yorick heads out on a mission to discover why the tragedy befell the world and to look for his girlfriend Beth (Juliana Canfield), who he last heard was halfway across the world in Australia.
The show scored a series order in February, and pointed to a smooth onward path. Yet the gods of TV difficulties weren't done with The Last Man. Croal hit Twitter today to release a statement with the news, which you can read below. She and Green are both leaving the show, and will now be replaced. It's a similar situation to Green's work on American Gods, where he and Bryan Fuller were ousted after one season.
According to The Wrap, the cast will remain on board and the show will progress, but we can only hope that the replacement creatives shepherd the show to success.
