Though it was largely a dramatic sci-fi thriller series about alien abductions, strange creatures and government conspiracies, The X-Files was still able to have a little fun along the way, with certain episodes poking fun at its own style and cases. Now there will be even more X-related comedy, as original network Fox is developing an animated spin-off exploring the sillier side of the supernatural called The X-Files: Albuquerque.
The new series will not feature David Duchovny's driven investigator Fox Mulder or Gillian Anderson's skeptical scientist Dana Scully, but instead follows an office full of misfit FBI types who dig into cases to wacky, ridiculous or dopey for even our heroes to consider. It sounds a little like recent Star Trek 'toon spin-off Lower Decks.
Show creator Chris Carter is involved as an executive producer, though he won't be in charge of writing it. Instead, that falls to Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko, who are writing the pilot and will run the show alongside former X-Files writer Gabe Rotter.
The X-Files originally ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, launched two movies and returned for briefer revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. From the looks of this, the new 'toon show will be the future of the franchise. The truth, apparently, is way out there.
