Rumours of The X-Files 2 have abounded so frequently over the years that the project has taken on the sort of mythological sheen that would prompt Mulder and Scully themselves to investigate its existence (during which, no doubt, Mulder would see a workprint while Scully would miss the whole thing while rummaging around in her handbag).
But no longer can we file The X-Files 2 (aka the sequel to The X-Files Movie) under ‘Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster, Dirk Kuyt’s Career And Other Unsolved Mysteries’. For it’s real, it’s happening, and it’s happening on December 10, when David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will step before the cameras as Special Agent Fox Mulder and Special Agent Dana Scully for the first time in over five years.
Yes, according to our good friends at Comingsoon.net, the X-Files sequel will start shooting on that date in Vancouver, under the auspices of series creator Chris Carter, who co-wrote the script with Frank Spotnitz.
Presently, that script is under lock and key, so we don’t know for sure if this film will bring an end to the alien conspiracy story that defined The X-Files’ nine-year run on the gogglebox, or be (as Duchovny has hinted in the past) a standalone story. But we’re certainly intrigued.
Of course, one has to worry whether the five-year gap between TV show and film (and, even more substantial, the ten-year gap between films, by the time this comes out) will have diminished the public’s appetite for more shadowy conspiracy/monster-hunting stuff, but Empire has always been a fan of The X-Files and we sincerely hope that this movie proves a success.
