Idris Elba's John "Loofah" Luther is back on the beat and back in the coat for the new series of the hard-boiled crime drama, and there's a new arrival among the cast. BAFTA winner Wunmi Mosaku has joined the team.

According to the Beeb, Mosaku, who scored a trophy for her work on Damilola, Our Loved Boy, is on board as D.S. Catherine Halliday, who gets drawn into our hero's typically dark world.

According to the official synopsis, it goes down like this: "as a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

"But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and change John Luther forever."

Luther regulars Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley and Patrick Malahide are back for the new series, which just kicked off shooting. According to series creator/writer Neil Cross, "We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling season of Luther there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do."

Mosaku is no stranger to working with Elba, having appeared in Guerrilla last year. She's currently on screen in Channel 4's Kiri.
