Tom Cruise's renewed dalliance with sci-fi is set to continue. We knew that, following the success of Oblivion and the buzz around Edge Of Tomorrow, one of his next journies into the future would be an adaptation of Chohei Kambayashi's novel (and subsequent anime) Yukikaze. That project now has a screenwriter, in Wrath Of The Titans' Dan Mazeau.
Set later this century, Yukikaze involves Earth suffering an invasion of mechanical hive-minded aliens through an interdimensional portal. Said monsters are known as the JAM, but are nothing to do with fruit conserves, Chris Morris, Paul Weller or the KLF. Earth dubs their home planet "Fairy", and sends a crack team of fighter pilots through the rift to take the offensive to the JAM. This team is called The Fairy Air Force. We will be very surprised if these names make it to the Hollywood version.
Problematic translations aside, what this does seem to signal is Tom Cruise back at the controls of a fighter jet, once more feeling the need for speed. Yukikaze is a reunion for much of the Edge Of Tomorrow team too: Cruise of course, plus producers Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally and Jason Hoffs. Also as with Edge Of Tomorrow, **Yukikaze **is coming together at Warner Bros.
Wrath Of The Titans is Mazeau's only produced script to date, but his name has come up in connection with DC's The Flash, Saturday morning favourite Jonny Quest, Moon heist movie Luna, and the manga adaptation Bleach. Warners announced The Flash for 2016 just last weekend at Comic-Con. We might expect Yukikaze a little earlier, but potential start and release dates are currently unconfirmed.
