Though Matthew McConaughey has been winning the lion’s share of the plaudits for the spectacular True Detective, Woody Harrelson is a big a part of why the dark crime character drama works so well. And it appears he’s happy to dive back into police work, taking a role in John Hillcoat’s **Triple Nine.

Hillcoat has been pushing this one through development for a while now, and appears to be finally zeroing in on an impressive cast after a few false starts. Matt Cook’s script will follow a group of crooked cops who, blackmailed by the Russian mob, hatch a deadly plan to kill a young LA police officer in order to distract the authorities' attention from a heist their colleagues are trying to pull across town.

Casey Affleck will play the targeted rookie, while Chronicle’s Michael B. Jordan will be a streetwise fellow cop who conspires with Chiwetel Ejiofor’s master thief to double-cross Affleck’s character. Harrelson, meanwhile, will be Affleck’s cop uncle. And that’s just the tip of the casting iceberg, as Aaron Paul, Gal Gadot, Teresa Palmer and Kate Winslet are all aboard the Lawless director’s latest. He’ll kick off shooting this year for a 2015 release.
