He may not be cutting through the cash in quite as sharp a fashion as Fox might like, but the return of the troubled, heroic Logan to our screens has proved there’s life in the old dog yet. The Wolverine has nabbed $55 million at the US box office, according to studio estimates.

It’s a little lower than everyone involved might have anticipated, but is bolstered by the fact that the film has also scored around $86 million from elsewhere in the world, for a running start of $141 million.** The Conjuring** was forced into second place, but the successful horror film still made $22.1 million, which means it took more in its second week alone than it cost to make. With a running US total of $83.8 million, we can surely expect yet more stories from the files of supernatural investigators the Warrens.

Despicable Me 2 also held well, earning $16 million in third, while Turbo slipped one place to fourth with $13.3 million. Grown Ups 2 rounded out the top five with $11.5 million.

Red 2 was sixth with $9.4 million, ahead of Pacific Rim in seventh, which made $7.5 million. **The Heat **held at eighth with $6.8 million and **R.I.P.D. **was ninth, taking home $5.8 million. Acclaimed indie drama Fruitvale Station expanded its release and jumped into the top 10, earning $4.6 million along the way.
