Writer/director Tom McCarthy has yet to disappoint us with his work so far – he’s made The Station Agent and 2007’s **The Visitor **and looks to be on form once more for his latest, Win Win, which debuted at Sundance. The trailer for the film has arrived over at Apple.
Win Win follows stressed small-town lawyer Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), a man juggling financial worries, concern for his family (including his wife, played by Amy Ryan) and the fact that the local high school wrestling team he coaches couldn’t grapple their way out of a wet paper bag.
Looking for way to make some cash, he agrees to become the legal guardian of one of his elderly clients, puts the old man in a rest home and pockets his care fee. But then comes a wrinkle in his plan: while he thought the bloke had no living relatives, a teenaged grandson turns up and Mike’s family takes him in.
Turns out the newcomer (Kyle, played by Alex Shaffer) is a wrestling whizz and for a while Mike’s worries seem to lessen. Until, that is, the boy’s drug-hungry, scheming mother (Melanie Lynskey) also shows up.
Empire’s own Damon Wise saw and enjoyed the film at this year’s festivaland it’s one we’re definitely looking forward to.
Check out the trailer at Apple and let us know what you think. Win Win is set for release on March 18 in the States, though there’s no date listed for the UK just yet.
