Willem Dafoe is going green again – he’s joined the cast of Andrew Stanton’s John Carter Of Mars, playing a green-skinned Martian warrior.

However, this is no bad guy repeat for the former Green Goblin – this time around, he’s on the side of the angels; his Tars Tarkas, leader of the multi-limbed Thark, teams up with Taylor Kitsch’s eponymous hero, a Civil War soldier who is mysteriously transported to the Red Planet, and finds himself in the middle of an even bigger conflict.

The four-limbed Tars, unique amongst his generally savage people for being able to appreciate the little things in life, like art and love, should provide a heck of a showcase for Dafoe, although it’s not yet known whether the actor will be donning make-up, or a rubber suit, or if he’ll be squeezing into a mo-cap suit.

Stanton co-wrote, with Mark Andrews, and directing the epic Disney flick, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels. Filming starts next year, with the release coming in 2012.
