They may not be competing in the current big sporting event (that would be the Tokyo Olympics, in case it somehow bypassed you), but Venus and Serena Williams remain two of the greatest tennis players, heck, athletes ever to step on to a court or any other sporting venue. But what of the man who raised them and began their training, seeing their potential from an early age? King Richard is here to address that, with Will Smith starring and the first trailer online.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green with a script from Zach Baylin, King Richard has Smith playing Richard Williams. Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.
Saniyaa Sidney is Venus here, with Demi Singleton as Serena. Aunjanue Ellis, Tony Goldwynand Jon Bernthal are all also in the cast. Will this take Smith into awards consideration? It's certainly a transformative part for him. As for the film, it'll be in UK cinemas on 19 November.
