There's been talk of a follow-up (though, given how it ends, focused on a prequel) to 2007 post-apocalyptic Will Smith thriller I Am Legend for a few years, but nothing has emerged. Now, there's a surprise forward jump, with word from Deadline that Smith will return for a new movie, joined this time by Michael B. Jordan.

That's quite the initial line-up for the movie, further details of which are being kept quiet for now. No director is attached yet – Francis Lawrence made the first film – though we do know that original co-writer Akiva Goldsman is back on script duty.

I Am Legend was the latest adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel, and follows Robert Neville (Smith), one of the very few survivors of a massive, deadly pandemic that killed most people and turned many others into vampire-like mutants.

Given that [SPOILER ALERT] Smith's Neville dies saving two other survivors, it's tough to guess where the story might go from here, though there's a chance it'll be both a prequel with Smith before he battles his foes and also a story yet years later with Jordan's character dealing with the world as it is by then. Or even a parallel possibility...

We'll have to wait and see what Goldman, Smith and Jordan produce, but the movie won't be out for a while yet since it's still at an early stage.
