Can you really spoof something that is inherently bonkers as the Eurovision Song Contest? Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams and director David Dobkin seem to think so, and are out to prove it with the trailer for Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga.
The titular Fire Saga are Lars (Ferrell) and Sigrit (McAdams), a pair of Icelandic musicians who have long harboured a dream to represent their country in the equally titular singing contest. Trouble is, they're largely considered a joke and initially dismissed. But then, they somehow get their shot and... well, as you can predict, it doesn't go at all well initially.
Representing a Wedding Crashers__ reunion for Dobkin and McAdams (and Ferrell pops up in that film briefly too), this features Graham Norton (because of course), Dan Stevens as Alexander Lemtov, a hunky rival for both Fire Saga's singing ambitions and their potential romance and Pierce Brosnan as Erick, Lars' "incredibly handsome" father.
Can this comedy, written by Ferrell and SNL veteran Andrew Steele avoid being buried beneath a pile of riffing and stitched together improv? We like its chances given the people involved, but we'll find out for sure when the movie lands on Netflix on 26 June.
