Will Ferrell gives good bluster and blunder, and he's planning to apply both to a new dark comedy about a family holiday gone wrong. Ferrell will star with Catherine Keener and Michael Cera in Captain Dad.

Sebastian Silvais writing and directing the film, which finds Ferrell as Rich Peelman, looking to surprise his wife Linda (Keener) with the perfect birthday present. He hits upon the idea of a Caribbean trip on a sailboat with their six kids and respective partners. But Peelman has badly overestimated his ability to handle the vessel they picked, and he's soon out of his depth – literally, in some cases.

As tempers flare and even the most easygoing on the clan start planning to chuck him overboard, can this preening, self-satisfied patriarch learn that he's not always? Right? We'll have to wait and see: it's an indie comedy, so chances are he could end up walking a makeshift plank.

Ferrell will next be seen in parental betting comedy The House, due one June 30 next year. Keener has indie pics Unless and We Don't Belong Here awaiting release, while Cera contributes a voice to animated comedy Sausage Fest and will be heard as Robin in next year's The Lego Batman Movie.
