Yabba dabba doo! In today's remake news, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are reportedly planning a new animated film version of The Flintstones. Through their production company, Gary Sanchez Productions, the team are hoping to bring the animation to the big screen, with a script by The Campaign and The Other Guys veteran Chris Henchy.
The Flintstones, of course, first hit TV screens way back in 1960 and told the story of a pre-historic Stone Age neighbourhood, complete with a laugh track. It centred on Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, as well as their wives, Wilma and Betty. Prior to The Simpsons, it was the most successful animated series on US network TV.
Of course, we've been here before: in 1994, we had a fairly decent live-action adaptation, with John Goodman and Rick Moranis as Fred and Barney, respectively. It was also, lest we forget, the film that introduced much of the world to Halle Berry, who played a character called Sharon Stone (an intentional joke, not a failed piece of casting).
After a belated (and rubbish) sequel in 2000, Viva Rock Vegas, things went quiet on the Bedrock front. We had the obligatory Simpsons spoof{
It would be the first time Gary Sanchez Productions has adapted such a well-known property, having stuck to original scripts in the past. Nonetheless, McKay and Ferrell are going ahead undetered, with the backing of Warner Bros. Don't expect anything too soon, though. It's early days and nothing is set in stone. (Sorry.)
