Wiig’s Comedy Gets Apatow Power

Talk about a boost crossed with a vote of confidence: Judd Apatow and former colleague Paul Feig have come aboard Kristin Wiig’s new wedding-themed comedy, with Feig taking the helm and Apatow offering his power producer assistance.

Feig and Apatow first worked together on the brilliant-but-cancelled US show Freaks And Geeks, which Feig created and Apatow wrote and produced. The series itself only lasted for 18 episodes, but it helped spawn the careers of Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segel and more.

Wiig has become one of the more reliably funny members of the current Saturday Night Live cast, and has begun to crop up more and more in movies (both Feig and Apatow have cast her in the past). She’ll next show up in Date Night, MacGruber and Paul, where she stars alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

But this new comedy – which she wrote, and which used to be titled Bridesmaids – will see her take a leading role in the tale of women competing to hold their friend’s wedding party.

Apatow producing the film gives it plenty of clout, and while Feig’s film directing career to date consists of a few small dramas and comedies, including the underperforming Grounded, he’s found plenty of success working behind the camera on such shows as The Office, Arrested Development and 30 Rock.

There’s no word on when it’ll start shooting, but we’re now even more excited for it than we were before. Go Wiig!
