The perfect heist thriller needs the right team for the job. And for Widows, Steve McQueen has assembled a fearsome foursome with the likes of Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez, and Elizabeth Debicki – the four titular widows who take matters into their own hands when their criminal husbands die on a job and leave a major debt at their feet. It’s a change of pace for the 12 Years A Slave and Shame director, adapting a Lynda LaPlante ITV thriller with a screenplay co-written with McQueen by Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn.

Empire has an exclusive image from the film, as seen in the new issue, showing the widows attempting a heist of their own.

“I would label the film ‘political pop’, because there are things that are a little bit over the top. It’s a movie!” McQueen tells Empire in the new issue. “I wanted on this picture to [be] something that would entertain, and at the same time enlighten. It’s exaggeration because you’re trying to fit everything into two hours and ten minutes, trying to fit the reality within that. That’s where the pop comes in.”
