Steve McQueen makes tough films. Brilliant, but tough. From Hunger, to Shame, to 12 Years A Slave, the British director has framed humanity in dark, painful places — and while the same can be said of his new film Widows, it also marks a change of pace for the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

This time he’s heading into ripping crime thriller territory, adapting a Lynda La Plante ITV drama with a new screenplay from Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn. The titular widows are four women — Elizabeth Debicki’s Alice, Viola Davis’ Veronica, Cynthia Erivo’s Belle, and Michelle Rodriguez’s Linda — whose criminal husbands all die in a job-gone-wrong. When the debt lands at the women’s feet, they take it upon themselves to make it right. Here’s a brand new image of the widows themselves, as seen in the new issue of Empireon sale now{ =nofollow}.
